Dan Patrick

After a six-year stretch as a sports anchor for CNN, Dan Patrick was partnered with Keith Olbermann to form the greatest duo of sports anchors ever, jump-starting this sports channel to a whole new level. The two served together from 1992-1997, but Dan Patrick was part of the network since 1989, to eventually leave his position and truly end an elite era of sportscasting in 2006. Aside from being a SportsCenter anchor, Patrick also covered Super Bowls, World Series, NBA Finals, and Final Four tournaments throughout his lengthy career and hosted his own show, called the Dan Patrick Show, from 1999 to 2007. Fat Man is the codename for the atomic bomb that was detonated over Nagasaki, Japan, by the United States on August 9, 1945. It was the second of the only two nuclear weapons to be used in warfare to date, the other being Little Boy, and its detonation caused the third man-made nuclear explosion. It was an implosion-type weapon with a plutonium core.

Fat Man was dropped from the B-29 bomber Bockscar, piloted by Major Charles Sweeney of the 393d Bombardment Squadron, Heavy, and exploded at 11:02 AM, at an altitude of about 1,650 feet, with a yield of about 21 kilotons of TNT or 88 terajoules. Because of poor visibility due to cloud cover, the bomb missed its intended detonation point, and damage was somewhat less extensive than that in Hiroshima. An estimated 39,000 people were killed outright by the bombing at Nagasaki, and a further 25,000 were injured. Thousands more died later from related blast and burn injuries, and hundreds more from radiation illnesses from exposure to the bomb’s initial radiation. The bombing raid on Nagasaki had the third highest fatality rate in World War II after the nuclear strike on Hiroshima and the March 9/10 1945 fire bombing raid on Tokyo.

Like his skills in linguistics, he was precocious in math. For instance, he created a logarithm in his sixth year to calculate the day of the week on any day in history. He also corrected E. V. Huntington’s mathematics text galleys at the age of eight. He surpassed his father, who was also a genius, in mathematics at the age of eight and mastered higher mathematics and planetary revolutions at age 11. He also lectured Harvard Mathematical Club on Four-Dimensional Bodies when he was 11. After the lecture on Four-Dimensional Bodies, Professor Daniel Comstock of MIT told reporters that William Sidis would someday be the greatest mathematician of the century.

His Ability to Write and Pass Tests

Sidis wrote four books between the age of four and eight, two on Anatomy and two on Astronomy. He read and learned Gray’s Anatomy by Henry Gray at age six, which would help him pass a student medical examination. And thus, he passed the Harvard Medical School Anatomy Exam at seven years old and then when he turned eight, passed the MIT Entrance Exam.

His Education

William Sidis started grammar school at age six, finished third grade in three days, and graduated grammar school in seven months. He was able to get into Harvard at nine, but was told to take a couple years off to allow his personality to catch up with his intellect. At the age of ten, in a single evening, corrected Harvard logic professor Josiah Royce’s book manuscript. He became the youngest student ever to enroll at Harvard at 11. Graduated from Harvard, cum laude, at the age of 16 and entered Harvard Law School in 1916.

His IQ

To put his IQ in perspective, there are some numbers to realize first. The average IQ of society is 100, with an IQ above 140 giving people the title of a genius. Some of the famous genuis’ IQ in history include George Washington with 140, Mozart and Charles Darwin with 153, Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein with 160, Leonardo da Vinci at a 180, and Sir Isaac Newton with a whopping IQ of 190. William James Sidis, on the other hand, had an IQ estimated to be around 250 – 300!

The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is not “just a hole in the ground,” but instead is a whole new way to appreciate the time and effort Mother Nature can enact over a long timelines. Spanning two-hundred and seventy seven miles in length and eighteen miles in width, the Canyon is a splendid location for the appreciation of the earth’s age. Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa, reaching well over five-thousand meters in height (almost twenty-thousand feet), and is comprised of seven summits. The three major volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira, have been quiet for the past two centuries with the former two peaks being extinct. Shira, while still technically active, lays dormant for the time being, leaving visitors to the mountain free to marvel in its splendor. If one wishes to get a taste of just how small they are in the grand scheme of the world, Kilimanjaro is a good indicator of scope.

Forbidden City

The imperial palace was completed in 1420 and held emperors of the Ming Dynasty all the way to the Quing Dynasty. It can be found in what is now the center of Beijing, and took approximately a million workers to build it in that location. The site was utilized as the home of emperors and their families and the cite for Chinese Governmental ceremonies that occurred over the years. The Forbidden City is now a popular tourist attraction and has been turned into a museum house.

Machu Picchu

Built as an estate for Peruvian emperor Pachucuti in the fifteenth century, this sprawling creation lays atop a mountain ridge, overseeing the Urubamba valley. The estate was broken into three sectors: the Sacred District, the Popular District, and the District of Priests and Nobility. The site remained hidden from the Spanish during their famous conquest of South America as its use predated the arrival of the Europeans. Machu Picchu is an important tourist attraction and is thus restored frequently to attract continual visits.

The Roman Colesseum

Today’s colesseums and stadiums may impressive works; however, the size and intricacies of the Roman Empires Colesseum are a true wonder. Built under the rule of Vespavian and completed under Titus, the marvel is a monument to the great need of entertainment sought by all as we lay upon this mortal coil. Within the walls there were extravagant plays, chariot races, and of course the infamous gladiator battles which dazzled hundreds of thousands throughout the years of use. Today, the site still stands proudly in Rome and is constantly visited by many tourists.

The Egyptian Pyramids

Another grand model of human ingenuity and effort, the Pyramids were built by slaves of the Egyptian Pharos. The monuments are not only impressive visually, but also are some of the most precisely built structures of all time. Modern engineers still marvel at how well the temples are constructed, as some of the design details are so specific that they defy the early era technological know-how. It is said that up to 100,000 workers contributed their efforts towards building these 138 masterpieces as early as 2630 BCE.

The Great Wall of China

This amazing piece of architecture was built by the Chinese to keep the Mongolian hoards out of the country in 221-204 B.C. and is a standing monument to human ingenuity and tenacity. The wall has been maintained since, even though some major surgery has had to be done to some sections of it. This 8,852 kilometer-long structure is a must-visit, and the majority of it is surrounded by magnificent mountains making it even that much better than what it already was in the first place.
